Health Information Exchange (HIE)

Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) are systems that enable healthcare providers to efficiently and securely exchange a patient's medical information electronically. By utilizing health information technology (HIT), clinicians can review medical histories, allergies, and previous treatments, thereby enhancing diagnostic accuracy and minimizing medical errors.

According to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), there are three primary types of HIEs:

- Consumer-mediated exchanges: Empower patients to manage health information between themselves and their healthcare providers.

- Directed exchanges: Enable healthcare providers to electronically share orders, test results, and discharge summaries through secure messaging or compatible electronic health record (EHR) systems.

- Query-based exchanges: Common in urgent and emergency care situations, these exchanges allow providers to directly request patient information from other healthcare professionals.
