Definition

A pharmacist is a licensed healthcare professional, trained to the Doctor of Pharmacy level, who dispenses medications, checks prescriptions for safety and interactions, counsels patients and, in many states, gives vaccines. Pharmacists work in retail chains, independent pharmacies, hospitals, clinics and specialty pharmacies, and hospital pharmacy directors often influence medication and technology purchases.

Pharmacists work in community pharmacies, hospitals, clinics, long-term care, mail-order and specialty pharmacies and industry. They check that each prescription is right for the patient, watch for interactions and side effects, and teach patients how to take their medications.
