Definition

Endocrinology is the medical specialty that diagnoses and treats disorders of the hormone-producing glands, such as diabetes, thyroid disease, adrenal and pituitary disorders, osteoporosis and other hormone imbalances. Endocrinologists usually work in outpatient practices or hospital clinics, and they are a key audience for diabetes devices, drugs and remote monitoring programs.

Endocrinology covers disorders caused by hormones that are too high or too low, which can affect metabolism, growth, mood, bone health and reproduction. Endocrinologists diagnose and manage conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disease and adrenal disorders.

## What is the endocrine system?

The endocrine system is the set of glands that release hormones into the bloodstream to control body functions such as metabolism, growth and mood. Key glands include the thyroid, pituitary, adrenal glands, pancreas and the ovaries or testes.

## What conditions do endocrinologists treat?

- **Diabetes:** insulin therapy, blood sugar control and diabetes technology such as pumps and continuous glucose monitors
- **Thyroid disorders:** hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer
- **Adrenal disorders:** conditions such as Addison's disease and Cushing's syndrome
- **Pituitary disorders:** such as acromegaly and hypopituitarism
- **Bone and mineral disorders:** osteoporosis and calcium disorders
- **Reproductive hormone disorders:** problems that affect fertility and menstrual cycles

## Why is endocrinology important in healthcare?

Hormone disorders are often chronic and affect many organs, so endocrinologists manage patients over years and work closely with primary care. Diabetes alone touches cardiology, nephrology, ophthalmology and podiatry, which makes good endocrine care a large part of preventing complications.

## What endocrinology means for teams selling into healthcare

Endocrinologists are a core audience for diabetes device makers, pharmaceutical companies and remote monitoring vendors. Most practice in outpatient clinics, in independent groups or in health system practices, so finding the right physicians means knowing which sites they work at and which groups they belong to.
