Definition

A chief medical officer (CMO) is the senior physician executive responsible for clinical quality, patient safety and the medical staff at a hospital, health system or healthcare company. CMOs connect clinical teams with executive leadership, and they are often part of the buying committee for clinical technology, care programs and outsourced services.

The CMO makes sure care at the organization is safe, follows regulations and meets quality standards, and represents physicians in executive decisions.

## What does a chief medical officer do?

- Oversees clinical operations and care quality
- Leads patient safety and clinical risk programs
- Works with the medical staff on credentialing, peer review and recruiting
- Makes sure clinical work meets regulatory and accreditation standards
- Aligns clinical goals with the rest of the executive team

## What qualifications does a CMO need?

CMOs are physicians with an active medical license and years of clinical practice, usually followed by leadership roles such as department chair or medical director. Many also hold a business or health administration degree, such as an MBA or MHA.

## Why are CMOs important in healthcare?

The CMO is the link between frontline clinicians and the executive team. Their support often decides whether a new clinical program, protocol or technology is adopted by physicians, and they are accountable when quality or safety measures slip.

## How do CMOs work with Health IT vendors?

CMOs help choose and roll out technology that affects clinical work, such as EHR changes, clinical decision support, quality analytics and AI tools. They want proof that a product fits clinical workflows, improves quality and does not add work for physicians. In larger systems, the CMIO handles day-to-day clinical IT decisions, so many deals need both the CMO and the CMIO.
